Vila Nova de Milfontes is a parish in the municipality of Odemira, Beja District, located on the northern bank of the Mira River estuary. It is part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. The parish covers 75.88 km² and has 5,031 inhabitants (2011), with a population density of 65.9 inhabitants per km².
At the end of the Christian Reconquista, the Alentejo coast was sparsely populated and disorganised. King Afonso III of Portugal made extensive donations to the Order of Santiago for their role in the war against the Moors. In 1486, King João II founded a new town at Milfontes to protect and develop trade. The area was separated from the municipality of Sines, which it had previously belonged to, and a new municipality was created, lasting until 1836. Vila Nova de Milfontes was a small fishing village, and as a municipal seat, it was never a major attraction (in 1801, it had only 1,559 inhabitants). It lost its status in 1836 when it was incorporated into the Cercal municipality and later into the Odemira municipality in 1855, where it remains today.
In this region, you can enjoy heritage sites such as the Forte de São Clemente (or Castle of Vila Nova de Milfontes), the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça (Vila Nova de Milfontes), the Chapel of São Sebastião (Vila Nova de Milfontes), as well as its beaches (Praia do Malhão, Praia da Cruz, and Praia dos Aivados).
